Editorial Policy

This policy explains how Wattfolk chooses what to write about, how guides are researched, and how we keep them accurate. It applies to every article on wattfolk.com.

Independence

Products are chosen on their merits. Brands cannot buy a place in a guide, a higher ranking or a softer verdict, and they never see a guide before it is published. Affiliate commissions are the same whichever product you choose, so they do not decide our picks. See our Affiliate and Advertising Disclosure.

What our research is based on

We do not test products in a lab, and we do not claim to. Our guides are built from sources you can check:

  • Manufacturer datasheets, manuals, warranty terms and certification listings (for example UL listings for inverters and chargers).
  • Government and independent data, including ENERGY STAR, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
  • State laws and utility rate schedules, which we link to when a guide depends on them.
  • Safety recalls and notices from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Patterns across verified owner reviews, used to spot common problems that specifications miss.

How we estimate output and savings

Solar output depends on where you live, which way the panels face and how much shade they get. When we estimate production or savings, we state our assumptions (panel wattage, sun hours, system losses and electricity price) so you can redo the maths for your home. We round conservatively and avoid best-case numbers.

Safety and the law

Wattfolk guides are general information, not electrical advice. Where a product connects to your home wiring, we explain the relevant rules, point to the manufacturer’s instructions and say when a licensed electrician is needed. Plug-in solar rules change quickly, so state law guides show the date they were last checked.

Updates and corrections

Prices, models and laws change. We review our most-read guides regularly and update them when specifications, availability or rules change. If you spot an error, email [email protected] with the page link. Confirmed corrections are made promptly.

Who is responsible
